Charlize Theron has been named as the United Nations' Messenger Of Peace for her work towards ending violence against women.
The actress was awarded the title on Friday, joining the ranks of fellow actors George Clooney and Michael Douglas. Bestowing her with the honour, U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said to Theron, "You have used your voice, compassion and special relationship with the public to create a better world."
Celebrities chosen as messengers of peace are asked to promote U.N. activities and ideals through public appearances and media contacts.
